Race Engineers of F1: All about the profession and its role in the sport

Have you ever wondered who the people communicating to drivers during a race are? Each driver has a Race Engineer who is behind the scenes and the ones who really run the show.

Race engineers are responsible for tailoring the car to suit the driver’s needs and the demands of each track. This involves overseeing car setup, analyzing telemetry data, and devising race strategies. On race day, they are the driver’s primary point of contact, providing crucial information such as tire management, fuel consumption, and lap times while directing the driver to achieve success at the race.

Famous Race Engineers in F1

Throughout F1 history, several race engineers have left an indelible mark, contributing to some of the sport’s most iconic moments.

Peter Bonnington (Bono) – Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team

Bonnington is best known as the race engineer for Lewis Hamilton, seven-time world champion. Since 2013, he has been a vital part of Hamilton’s success, guiding him through countless victories, including his historic 100th Grand Prix win in 2021. Bonnington’s calm demeanor and precise communication have been instrumental in managing high-pressure situations, such as Hamilton’s last-lap title-clinching effort at the 2008 Brazilian Grand Prix.

Gianpiero Lambiase (GP) – Red Bull Racing

Lambiase has worked diligently with Max Verstappen since 2016. Known for his straightforward and often witty communication style, Lambiase plays a critical role in Red Bull’s strategy. His expertise was evident during the chaotic 2021 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where his strategic calls helped Verstappen secure his first World Drivers’ Championship against Lewis Hamilton.

Guillaume Rocquelin (Rocky) – Red Bull Racing

Rocquelin served as Sebastian Vettel’s race engineer during his dominant era at Red Bull. He was crucial in Vettel’s four consecutive World Championships from 2010 to 2013.

Other race Engineers such as Bryan Bozzi and Mattia Spini have left influential impacts throughout F1.

For instance, Bozzi served as Pierre Gasly’s race engineer at ToroRosso, driving him to his maiden win at the 2020 Italian Grand Prix in Monza. He is now the race engineer for Charles Leclerc at Ferrari and led Leclerc to win the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix, which was impressively his second race working with Leclerc.

On the other hand, Mattia Spini previously worked as Lando Norris’ Race Engineer and played a vital role in Norris’ development as a driver. His guidance has been key in McLaren’s resurgence in competitiveness, particularly during Norris’ first pole position at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix. Despite the dramatic weather changes that affected the race outcome, Spini’s expertise was evident in managing the car’s setup and performance.

The bond between a driver and their race engineer is one of the most unique relationships in motorsport. Trust is paramount, as the driver relies on the engineer’s expertise to make split-second decisions. For example, the rapport between Hamilton and Bonnington has been likened to a “second marriage” due to their mutual understanding and respect. Similarly, Verstappen and Lambiase often joke during radio exchanges, showcasing their friendship even under intense pressure.

The Future of Race Engineering

Race engineers in Formula 1 increasingly rely on big data to make real-time decisions, analyzing telemetry on car performance, tire degradation, and weather conditions. AI and machine learning are beginning to enhance simulations and predictive analytics, forecasting outcomes and suggesting strategies, though engineers must still validate these insights against on-the-ground realities. Improved communication technologies, like augmented reality and head-up displays, could soon deliver real-time guidance to drivers. Sustainability efforts add complexity, as engineers optimize hybrid power units and energy recovery systems to balance performance with environmental goals. Additionally, race engineers mentor young drivers, teaching car setup, tire management, and race strategy, ensuring they’re prepared for the demands of modern F1.
